Zdravko Ponoš Resigns as Leader of the SRCE Party After the Election
Srbija centar, now outside parliament, will be run by its presidency until a congress within six months and says it will back pro-EU moves by the new majority.
Zdravko Ponoš, a former chief of the general staff and 2022 presidential candidate, has resigned as president of the Srbija centar (SRCE) party. The party’s presidency formally noted the resignation at an evening session on Tuesday, 3 November, according to N1 and Novosti. The party did not give a reason.
Who runs SRCE now
Until an electoral congress is held within the next six months, the party will be run jointly by its presidency and executive board. SRCE said it will continue to work as a party outside parliament.
Support for the new majority’s EU course
In its statement, the SRCE presidency described the fall of Aleksandar Vučić’s and the Serbian Progressive Party’s government as the most important step towards normalising conditions in the country. It said EU membership, a founding goal of the party three years ago, has no credible alternative, and urged the incoming government to do all it can to unblock Serbia’s accession talks. SRCE said it would support such policies rather than act as an opposition.
A party in flux
The resignation follows other departures. On 28 October, N1 reported that Duško Lopandić had resigned from all party posts and that Slobodan Petrović confirmed he had been expelled from SRCE. The new parliament, dominated by the Student List, must be constituted by 10 December.
